Here are two excellent books by Richard Olney:

Simple French Food (1974), ISBN 0-689-10575-4

The French Menu Cookbook: The Food and Wine of France—Season by Delicious Season—in Beautifully Composed Menus for American Dining and Entertaining by an American Living in Paris and Provence (1970), ISBN 0-671-20365-7
Nunc est bibendum.

If you're still looking there's a new one by Kimberley Lovato called Walnut Wine and Truffle Groves, you can get it from Amazon online.
Very good recipes with experiences written about also.
