Love the rice table, should'nt venture to spell it. When I was in Holland we had beer at the rice table. Also big wines would work & sake's.
Diet Coke?
I'd ask my friend marga, she is a transplant form Netherlands.

Ok~ yep 4 glasses of wine to the wind so I'm not even going to attempt to spell rice table in Dutch. It is a Dutch ivnention for one of their Indoensian colonies.....it is called 22 (or various amount) for the number of dishes you have on the table. Large quantities of rice with numurous spicy toppings. On the whole very little meat lots of cheerily interesting veggies.
We had Trimbach (YUMMMM and very good with spicy foods) and Heinekins (does not look right but I'm not going to look in the fridge right now) any way good combo.... As expected I went for the wine. WONDERFUL EVENING>

Sorry to say loungebaby but the real Dutch Rice Table is actually not Indonesian. I guess you mean the famous Rice Table served in Indonesian restaurant in Holland. Actually it is an Indonesian Rice Table. It's a Dutch colonial adaptation of the Indonesion Makan Besar like you said. It consists of rice accompanied by several side dishes brought to your table. Most of the time your table is full as there are so many side dishes. Small bowls with gorgeous Indonesian food. Egg rolls, sambals, satay, meat, diep fried stuff, fruit, vegatables, etc... Well, you've had it all.

Now for the first question. What to drink. Get an Alsace wine! Preferably a pinot gris. The peppery taste is a perfect combination with the spicy food. Actually I would always take Alsace wine for any Asian dish (except Japanese of course). If you're not into wine get a beer. Tastes lovely too.

But! For the REAL DUTCH RICE TABLE have a look at my weblog. Posting January 6th. That's the real Dutch stuff. And very tasty!

Cheers!

Like I said there are so many side dishes I don't know where to start. But to be honest don't even think about cooking it yourself, it would be a hell of a job. If you ever tried a Rice Table in an Indonesian restaurant in Holland you know what I am talking about.
Try whenever you come over to Holland.

Being from the Netherlands and having eaten hundreds of "Indonesian Rice tables" I must admit, that we usually drink a large beer with it. Some of the dishes can be very "pedis" (spicy) and the cool beer helps to put out the fire.

For Indonesian recipes, you can have a look at my webpage worldcook.net/Cooking/WorldRecipes/Indonesia- recipes.htm

Just make a few different dishes and serve with white rice and shrimp crackers; and a beer!

Welcome to this forum, Worldcook

what a coincidence: I as well am originally Dutch and was (partially) raised by an Indonesian family that indulged in the art of cooking (of course: there are no Indonesian families that don't love food )

However, originally, ice-cold water was drunk with the food
