Instead besides a great set of knives & an awesome collectoin of pans, what is your favourite kitchen gadget?

Mine is my stick blender--great for so many things!! From saving a broklen hollandaise to pureeing or craeting rustic soups, awesome homemade apple or fruit sauces... Mine actually came with other attachemnts; a mini food-processor kind of thin (perfect for softewning a small amount of cream cheese, etc), a wire whip, etc.

What's your favourtite toy & why?

The most-used "gadget" in my kitchen, believe it or not, is the Salad Shooter my mother bought me 10 years ago. It slices, it dices it even makes ravioli! That thing was made to last for ever & it's... cracks & all. It's greatly helped me bake, fry, grill, mix, you name it. It's an incredibly cheesy commercial turned in to a marvelous helper. ThanX Mom! Not knowing what she had done she added to my gasdgets when she bought me the hand Braun. Whoa! Mom's pot roast be damned, I am a chef! ThanX again!

Does any one have a source for which Japanese mandoline? Lately i'll love to get 1 but I couldn't pay $100+ for the classic model.

I've used and abused by knock-off for 3 years now. It's a plkastic version I got a Williams and Sonoma for $15. I've seen it since at The Kitchen Collection/clearly corning Outlet at big outlet malls. It doesn't have as much width variable capability as the expensive ones, but it's what you put into it! If you want paperthin slices, thicker slices, julienne and frenchfry thikcness, it does fine. I only regret it doesn't do a ripple cut for wafgfle fries.
