Hi all

I was treated by visiting Viennese friends to a couple of presents:

1) a Sachertorte from Demel 2) a Sachertorte from Hotel Sacher 3) a Stadlmann Muskat 2000 4) a Stadlmann Mandel-Hoeh Zierfandler 2000

Now about Sacher, this is my favourite cake, and today I get to do a comparative tasting. Maybe with a Domaine du Mas Blanc, or a Domaine de la Rectorie.

Anyhow, about zierfandler, I know what the grape is, but I have never tasted it. I am told this bottle is from old vines. I believe that it the grape can be called Cirfandli (in Hungary?).

Does anyone know something about these 2 wines, and the winery?

Michael P?

Thanks in advance

Mike

(PS, I treated them to 97-98 Bandol Domaine de Terrebrune to take home, and dinner 4 feet from the Med in a secluded open terrace on the rocks, grilled chapon fish in a rustic old shack, no chi-chis here, the kind of place that still has fluorescent tubes, some local yokels fishing and drinking that ended up having a swim, 22 degrees, overcast, rough sea, we got splashed a bit, we also watched a nuclear sub head for Toulon escorted by helicopters, fed the seagulls and talked too much, fuelled by some white wine from Cassis)

World famous Sachertorten both of them. Note that there has been juridical hassle a between the two producers a few decades ago, both arguing they had the original recipe. Both versions have a layer of apricot jam beneath the chocolate glaze and the cake; Demel's version a second layer in the middle. Sacher won the case, btw, and since that time it's the only Sachertorte entitled to use 'Original Sacher-Torte'. Demel stamp their version 'Ch. Demels Sachertorte', iirc.

May I ask you for alcohol content and state of dryness, i.e. 'Trocken', 'Halbtrocken', 'Lieblich' or 'Süss'?

Please report TN's, thank you.

The best wine for Sachertorte is Tokay - old or new style, whichever you prefer, both do astonishingly well. A medium rich to rich Madeira would also go perfectly. (That's a judgment to which I came after an extended tasting of chocolate desserts with some 50 stickies.)

The grape is Zierfandler.

Absolutely correct.

On the wines I can tell you more after I have the information I asked you for, because the producer makes Zierfandler in different styles, from Trocken to Trockenbeerenauslese.

The winery is well-reputed, one of the top 10 wineries in 'Thermenregion' south of Vienna. It is based in Traiskirchen, a village next to Gumpoldskirchen, which in itself is the best know commune of the region.

Yeah, I'm here.

You're welcome, of course.

Thank you for the link, Michael. That's the most detailed (and informative) map of Austrian wine regions that I've seen.
